Manitoba Fishing Regulations and Master Angler Program

Manitoba Regulations pertaining to Bolton Lake and Outposts:

In all of Manitoba, you must fish with barbless hooks. You can crimp the barb down with a decent set of pliers and you will not lose any fish if you do not give them any slack. You do not need to crimp everything in your box before you come to Manitoba, the Conservation Officers will only check what you have tied on the line when they pull you over. Your guide will be happy to crimp down your barbs on any lure you plan to use.

Foreign Live Minnows are not permitted on most fly-in lakes, including Bolton Lake and our Outposts. Live Minnows can be used if we catch them at Bolton Lake, but we have never done it. Night crawlers and leeches are permitted, but are rarely brought up. Most of our fishing is done with artificial lures, but once in a while a guest will have us buy a flat of crawlers and he'll come in bragging about the big Walleye he catches. Sorry for letting your little secret out John!

We eat Walleye, Lake Trout and the odd Northern Pike for shorelunch, but there are no fish taken home by our guests.

Anglers under the age of 16 can fish under their parents' license and therefore do not need to buy one. The fishing license for a non-resident is approximately $30 U.S. and it's good for the whole year.

Manitoba Master Angler Program

The Manitoba Master Angler Award program has been a great way for guests to be recognized as having the skill, patience and equipment necessary to land a trophy size fish. Although some days, when the fishing is hot, you can get away with being a beginner angler and still catch the fish of a lifetime. Being at the right place (Bolton Lake) at the right time (May - September) sure makes it a lot easier to become a Manitoba Master Angler.

If you fished anywhere in Manitoba, and you caught a trophy fish but did not fill out the Master Angler card, you can click here for a pdf. file of the Manitoba regulations and print out the page with the Master Angler Award Application. On this page you can also see the size requirements and other regulations for the 2004 season.
